National Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Domestic violence has probably touched your life in one way or another. Nearly three out of four Americans personally know someone who is or has been a victim of  domestic violence. Regardless of your age, your income level, your race or your background, domestic violence can touch your life.

Since the passage of the landmark Violence Against Women Act in 1994, championed by then Senator Joe Biden, our Nation has strengthened its response to this crime and increased services for victims. Still, far too many women and families in this country and around the world are affected by domestic violence.

Here are some statistics on domestic violence reported by the Domestic Violence Resource Center.
  • One in four women has experienced domestic violence in her lifetime.
  • Domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women – more than car accidents, muggings, and rapes combined.
  • Nearly one in five teenage girls reports a boyfriend threatened violence or self-harm if presented with a breakup.
  • Everyday in the US, more than three women are murdered by their husbands or boyfriends.
  • Domestic violence involves physical and emotional abuse behaviors.

During the month of October, Owens Investigations will spend time focusing our Pinterest Board on domestic violence and helping raise awareness.

If you are reading this today and are a victim of domestic violence, please know you do not have to suffer in silence.  There are resources and people who care and will provide you with the support needed to seek a safe place for yourself.  If you live in the Dallas area and need help today or know someone who does, here are two resources:
