Do You Know Who You Are Dating?

Dating. Relationships. Almost every person has been there. So how did you meet your last date? In a bar? Online? Introduced by friends? At work? At church? Some things never change. We tend to meet the people with whom we enter into relationships in the places we hang out. I think that will always be true. Today’s focus seems to be about meeting people online. But that is not what this post is about. You see, I don’t think meeting someone online is bad any more than meeting someone in a thousand other places where we have always...

Control Issues Can Warn of An Affair

Issues of control are one of the most common problems in a relationship where a partner is cheating. A spouse often monitors or controls phone usage and restricts access to finances and records. They may block the use of family vehicles, or may even keep you or your children from seeing family and  friends. It is very common for a cheater to separate you from others who might reveal their secret or advise you of their suspicions. Often, we find that control issues in marriages are a sign of a long term or chronic cheater, not an individual...

Texas Voter ID Law Update – Federal Lawsuit

Texas Voter ID Law Update – Federal Lawsuit

Back in June, I wrote about the Texas Voter ID law that would require all voters in Texas to have a valid ID, such as a driver license or the new Texas Voter ID. This law was passed in 2011 but that had been on hold because a federal court had blocked the law in August of last year. The U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in June that struck down key provisions of the 1965 Voting Rights Act had apparently cleared the way for Texas to move forward with implementation of the law. On Thursday, the Justice Department filed suit to keep Texas from...

Be Careful in School Zones!

School is starting! Some are excited about that (parents), some may not be (students), but there is one thing that effects almost everyone… school zones. It is important that we remember that school zones across the metroplex will be in full force on Monday, August 26, and that we all need to be careful to keep our speed at 20 mph (or whatever the posted speed is) and keep our eyes looking for children and parents that could be walking to school or crossing the street. There are a number of private schools that have already started...

Are Your Partner’s Put-Downs a Sign of an Affair?

Do you feel like you can’t do anything right? Do you feel like you keep giving and your partner keeps taking but they are still unhappy with you?  Perhaps an affair is the source of your problems. Does your partner constantly put you down and act impatient or rude? Do they say mean things and then tell you they were only joking? Criticism can turn into harsh emotional and verbal abuse. It often comes as a surprise that the motivation behind it may be unfaithfulness in the relationship. When people look back on their experiences with a...

What Is Due Diligence?

What Is Due Diligence?

Recently, I had a client ask me about doing some background research on a potential business investment. When I used the term “due diligence” in the conversation, I realized from the response that while he had heard the term before, he wasn’t positive exactly what it referred to in context, so I thought I would explain that here. Anytime you are considering making a business decision, you need to do your “due diligence” before making a commitment. Whether it is buying a business; investing in a business, company, or idea; going into business...

The Current Social Media Impact on Divorce

Since just about everyone you know is on some form of social media these days, the growing trend is for family law attorneys to use the evidence obtained from social media to strengthen their client’s case.
